Organize To Promote New, Agile Ways Of Working

A company’s organizational structure is critical to its success. Setting up a digital unit separate from the rest of the company will encourage new ways of working. And yes, it is critical for digital success.

For example, agile product development, test-and-learn methods speed up progress. At the same time, keeping the focus on customers and cross-functional teams that hire specific types of expertise.

Moreover, a digital unit can also assist attract and keep those professionals. How? By removing organizational limitations and providing them with the support of like-minded colleagues.

If such people are merely dropped into incumbents’ established structures, they may become bored and disillusioned with the pace of change.

Of course, they need to be able to make an immediate impact. But, to do that, you need to give them the power to make their own judgments.

However, isolating a digital component from the rest of the company isn’t the only solution.

To begin with, newcomers can (inadvertently) trample on what an incumbent has to offer. For instance, many insurance businesses have been there for over a century because they excel at what they do. But, they can start to cause channel conflict, especially if new products threaten to eat into existing revenue sources. As a result, the digital unit will need to be reintegrated at some point. And it will grow increasingly difficult as time goes on.

Whatever the option is, the important thing is to integrate the old and modern.

Nurture A Digital Culture

As you know, there are levels to hiring new digital employees. Employees need to have quick, collaborative and empowered thinking. It will become the default mode for new digital hires.

So, these methods must spread throughout the company. And now is the moment to start fostering them.

There is so much that needs to change. For example, you need continuous client input and comfort with testing and learning. Unfortunately, there are also occasional failures, but with digital culture, it won’t be such a big deal.

But, business owners may feel pressured to abandon the elements that have made them successful in favor of an untested culture.

One of the most difficult problems you’ll confront while pursuing digital methods is cultural or behavioral transformation.

Of course, you’re not obliged to discard the characteristics that have made you successful. Instead, you’re encouraged to revive your legacy with new ways of thinking and working.
